Our Mission —

Wildfire Safe Housesm (WSH) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and, along with Trial By Fire® dedicated to taking action to combat the tragic impact of wildfires by making houses more resistant to wildfires. WSH’s strategic plan includes research, education, administration of competitions designed to promote the use of fire resistive materials, products, methodologies, and designs both as applied to the retrofitting or improvement of existing homes as well as construction of new residential dwellings.

The activities, and programs WSH target a broad spectrum of industries impacted by wildfires and the public at large. We will reach out to individual homeowners, construction, development and design professionals, product manufacturers, insurance and finance professionals, and local,regional and federal agencies, in pushing forward the agenda of education, research, and implementation of practices designed to save homes and reduce loss caused by wildfires. Wildfires will be simulated, their impact recorded with and without fire-safe technologies developed through the competitions, and broadcast over the internet, cable, and other video transmitting sources to inform and educate the public and home designers.

Our Vision —

Wildfires in California, the United Sates and around the globe, have catastrophic effects upon the lives of those impacted and our communities at large. The vast and devastating results of wildfires include the loss of life, billions in property damage, and severe impact on the environment. The emotional and economic toll on families and businesses affected by wildfires cannot be measured. Nor can the impact on our firefighters, precious resources, and rippling effect through our economy.

Wildfires, and the loss and damage they cause, are increasing in severity, and continued growth puts more neighborhoods in areas prone to wildfire. Numerous private organizations and governmental agencies are taking steps to address the many issues associated  with wildfires, but so much more can and needs to be done. There is action that can be taken today to reduce the catastrophic losses resulting from wildfires.

WSH has established a multifaceted approach to effectuate its goals.

Elements of the strategic plan include the following:

  1. WSH will to serve as a practical and educational resource for homeowners, construction, development and design professionals and others impacted by wildfires. WSH seeks to identify current information on wildfire research, fire resistive building materials and products, and effective “wildfire safe” designs and practices. It is intended that WSH become a focal point of reference for those interested in, or involved with, wildfire resistive products, construction and research.
  2. WSH will develop a curriculum and establish a contractors training program in the use of wildfire safe materials, products and procedures for existing home retrofitting and new construction.
  3. WSH will spawn research and innovation by conducting a university level architectural design competition, where new wildfire safe houses are designed and tested.
  4. WSH intends to force public awareness to the highest possible degree through the Internet, and all types of local, regional and national media, conferences and trade shows. To attract public attention and media, WSH intends to introduce Trial By Fire® whereby fire resistive materials, products, retrofitted homes and new designs are subjected to wildfire conditions and tested for wildfire resistivity.

The efforts of WSH are intended to:

  1. Prevent unnecessary loss of life and property and lessen the number of homes that burn in a wildfire;
  2. Maximize resources for firefighters to fight wildfires instead of protecting homes threatened by those fires;
  3. Stimulate local economies and construction industries through the manufacture, sale and use of fire resistive products and materials in retrofitting existing homes and new construction;
  4. Reduce the economic impact on the economy, insurers and homeowners due to destruction of homes by wildfires
  5. Help preserve the environment by preventing more homes from burning, and rebuilding fewer.
